Important terms used when talking about roses

  • Self Cleaning

Self cleaning refers to the ability for the petals to drop cleanly when the bloom is finished, thus eliminating the need to remove the old bloom.

  • Resistant

Resistant is a quality to look for in a plant; but, it does not necessarily guarantee that a plant is immune to everything.

  • Disease Resistant

Disease resistant is an indicator used to signify a plants ability to naturally ward off common fungal and bacterial plant problems such as powdery mildew. These enemies of the rose deform leaves, stems and blooms.

  • Pest Resistant

Pest resistant includes a plant’s ability to fend off an attack of garden invaders including, but not limited to, the Japanese beetle, Rose midge, saw fly, thrips, leaf hoppers plus other minor rose pests such as, aphids, leaf cutter bees and spider mites.

  • Winter Hardiness

The ability of a plant to come through the winter unharmed. The true definition of winter hardiness for woody plants means that no above ground portion is injured. With roses, the definition means as long as the plant comes back from winter and blooms then it is winter hardy. In other words, if a rose bush dies back to the ground, but regrows and blooms, it would be classified as winter hardy. This classification also assumes that the plant is planted deep enough. This is more a problem in climates with winter temperatures reaching 10℉/-12℃.

  • Growth Habit

Growth habit is the form that the plant naturally takes.

  • Dependable Growth Habit

Dependable growth habit indicates that the plant will maintain a balanced, rounded form without additional help. Even so, it is advisable that, these plants receive annual pruning. It is recommended that all deadwood be removed and that the plant be pruned back by 1/2 to 2/3. Regular pruning promotes better overall plant health and bloom production.

  • Fragrant

    Having an aroma.

  • Fragrance in the Rose

Historically, fragrance in the rose is an expected trait. In fact, reference to something smelling like a rose, evokes the essence of the classic rose scent, attar of rose. In reality a rose can have many fragrances ranging from light to strong, sweet to earthy, fruity to spicy. Fragrance can also vary within a single bloom depending on the time of day, temperature, humidity or age.

Most important to note is that scent is specific to an individual. Something pleasant to one may be offensive to another. The intensity varies from person to person as well, some may not detect a fragrance at all when it is obvious to others. Some roses have no scent whatsoever.
